PA2C - El Automovil Gris - Youth Performances Thu Jan 25 2007
Teatro De Ciertos Habitantes (Mexico City) presented 2 performances of "El Automovil Gris" (The Grey Automobile) to 700 middle school students from Del Valle ISD. The performances included live narration, dance and music accompaniment to a 1915 Mexican silent film.

Members of Salvage Vangurd Theatre went to Del Valle High School to perform episodes of their production The Intergalactic Nemesis, and to talk with students about the play and theatre.

Los Cenzontles visited Ojeda Jr. High and Del Valle Jr. High to perform traditional Mexican music and dance, and to talk with students about these traditional art forms.

Los Cenzontles visited the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center to perform a variety of traditional Mexican music and dance styles. The group discussed the history of the music and dance and answered questions from the audience.

Compania Tania Perez-Salas members Kristin Taylor, Katherine Horrigan and Tzitzi Benavides led an intermediate and advanced level dance master class for UT dance students. Students were taught choreography from the company's repertoire. The class finished with a discussion of professional contemporary dance in Mexico.

Hubbard Street Dance Youth Performance Wed Sep 13 2006
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago performed for 2400 students from 16 schools at Bass Concert Hall. Jim Vincent, HSDC artistic director, talked about dance and answered questions from students between the dance pieces. In the show's last dance piece, students and a teacher were brought on stage to dance with the company.

Fulbright-Hays Projects Abroad - Exploring Mexico: Performing Arts & Culture Fri Jun 30 2006
This spring, the UT College of Fine Arts, Performing Arts Center and Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies were awarded a Fulbright-Hays Projects Abroad Grant to take 15 K-12 school teachers from Texas, California and Arizona to Mexico for four weeks to learn about the history, culture and arts of Mexico. This summer the group traveled to five cities (Oaxaca, Mexico City, Morelia, Mazatlan, Guadalajara), seeing performances, meeting artists, visiting cultural institutions, and learning from scholars and arts professionals. These teachers will utilize these experiences and knowledge to develop curriculum around the performing arts and Mexican culture and history to utilize in their classes and to share with educators around the country.

Alejandro Escovedo, "By the Hand of the Father" Wed Apr 5 2006
Alejandro Escovedo and company members from "By the Hand of the Father" went to Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in Pharr, TX (Rio Grande Valley) to meet with students and talk about the multi-media play.





Ying Quartet at Asian American Cultural Center Wed Mar 22 2006
The Ying Quartet performed pieces by contemporary Chinese composers at the Asian American Cultural Center. Students of the Center's music competition also performed and had their playing critiqued by the Ying Quartet. Afterwards everyone enjoyed conversation and a potluck dinner.

The City of Austin provided transportation for seniors to the Ying Quartet performance at the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center. Members of the quartet discussed the music that they played and answered questions from the audience. The enthusiastic crowd gave the quartet 2 standing ovations during the performance!





Explore UT/Mariachi Vargas Workshops Sat Mar 4 2006
As part of Explore UT, members of Mariachi Vargas led 4 free classes for the public in trumpet, strings, vocals, guitars and other stringed instruments. After the instruction, the students from the 4 separate classes came together on the steps of Bass Concert Hall to perform the songs under the direction of Mariachi Vargas.

The Travis High School Mariachis performed at a reception organized by the UT PAC for Mariachi Vargas at the Austin City Limits studio at KLRU. Jose "Pepe" Martinez, musical director of Mariachi Vargas, directed the student group before taking the stage with Mariachi Vargas and performing an electrifying show.

Delfos Contemporary Dance in-school performances Fri Jan 27 2006
Members of Delfos Contemporary Dance (Mazatlan, Mexico) gave a special performance for students at McCallum High School. After the performance the dancers talked with students from Theater, Dance and Spanish classes. A similar performance was held at Del Valle Junior High School earlier in the week. Members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan lead four workshops as part of Explore UT. More than 80 adults, students and young people participate in the individual sessions (guitar/other strings, violin, vocals, horns).

More than 150 members of the Jewish Community Association of Austin and other guests enjoy a special afternoon lecture/demonstration by the Martha Graham Dance Company. Peru Negro, a 26-member dance and musical ensemble from Lima, Peru, participate in a community workshop at the new George Washington Carver Cultural Center & Museum. In honor of this event, which marks the first collaboration in the new space between the UT PAC and the Carver, the PAC presents Carver director Bernadette Phifer with two years' worth of complimentary tickets to PAC events.
