Overview
ArtesAmerica

"We cannot doubt that the quality of life in Texas and the nation will be influenced greatly by ways in which the Western Hemisphere develops over the next two decades. In my view, our University ought to do the best it can to see that relationships between the United States and Latin America develop as beneficially as possible. We should become the nation's most important source of expertise about Latin America- about its culture, its language, its issues and politics, its relationships with other regions of the world, its business practices and its technical development."

-Dr. Larry Faulkner, President
The University of Texas at Austin
State of the Uniersity Address: October 6, 1998

"It is only when we understand each other's culture that true respect and appreciation happens. ArtesAméricas is quite simply about this."
-Pebbles Wadsworth, Director
Performing Arts Center, The University of Texas at Austin
What is ArtesAméricas?
Founded in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin’s Teresa Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies, with the support of the Latin American Initiative, the UT Performing Arts Center continues its mandate from Dr. Faulkner to foster and strengthen our relationship with Latin America by sharing the vast resources of the University. The mission of ArtesAméricas is to share UT Austin’s knowledge of Latin America by serving as a resource for the performing arts throughout the Americas.

To accomplish this mission, in collaborative efforts throughout the Americas, and with student involvement as a principal objective, ArtesAméricas will:

- Present Latin American and US Latino artists at the UT Performing Arts Center and encourage the presentation of Latin American and US Latin artists throughout the Americas.

- Share accompanying educational materials with the Americas.

- Plan, facilitate and execute both educational exchanges and professional exchanges throughout the Americas.

ArtesAméricas Arts Education, Outreach & Cultural Participation Program
Where the work is seen, it must also be understood.
ArtesAméricas not only provides a vehicle for presenting Latin American and Latino artists, but also includes and is defined by the educational components that complement each of our programs.

- Comprehensive Materials on artists and their countries help "contextualize" the audience’s and community’s experience of the art forms presented. Through crosscultural interaction, graduate students work with ArtesAméricas to participate in the development of these materials prepared for educational use, and all are in accordance with National Teaching Standards.

- International Exchanges allow ArtesAméricas to act as a resource, bringing together knowledge and experience in collaboration between UT Austin, presenters from around the country, artist management resources, and our colleagues and friends in Latin America.

These events and programs serve as a catalyst to broaden the understanding, appreciation and support of the arts.

These programs are funded, in part, through the generosity of the Roy F. & Joann Cole Mitte Foundation.
